In fire emergencies where the main water source does not provide sufficient pressure to reach higher or more difficult areas, firefighters attach a hose from the main hydrant to the firetruck, boost the water pressure, then feed it back to the fire brigade booster assembly to distribute to the system.
Different Assembly Types
The design, installation and configuration of fire brigade boosters rely on the standards set by AS 2419.1-2005. There are 16 different booster assemblies, each having their technical specifications:

Booster Assembly Standards
Here we list some of the standards. Refer to AS 2419.1 for the full set of requirements.Location
- Be easily accessible to firefighters and clear from any obstructions
- Be operable by a fire pumping appliance 8 metres
- Not obstruct driveways or any access to emergency vehicles
- Be where it’s easily spotted – in front of the building
- Be within 10 metres from the external wall of the building being served
When is a booster assembly required?
- When internal fire hydrants are installed
- In certain cases when there are external fire hydrants
- If more than one fire hydrant is needed to serve a building
AS 2419 sets specific requirements for when the booster assembly is installed within the externall wall, away from the building being served or when in an enclosure.
